I’m an electrician. When running conduit, I sometimes have to run it along a block wall. To answer your question: It really depends on the type of ancor you use. If you put an ancor in the masonary, (aka: “masonry”) joint, you run the risk of splitting the joint. there are areas of the block that are solid. Each area is about one inch wide. Up to one inch from the long edges and right in the center of the block in the “run” direction. Those areas are where I have found to be the most stable places to put an ancor. If you have to put an ancor in the hollow area of the block, then it is best to use a butterfly bolt, also known as a toggle bolt, ( http://www.webanswers.com/post-images/E/E9/E71FC139-1271-EC16-A94010C81A6760CE.jpg ) with a fender washer against the drilled hole.

The block is cast as one complete solid bonded unit.
A joint is is a shared bond and not as strong since the adhesion to the blocks is not as strong and can pull loose and/or damage or weaken the joint..
If the accessory to be attached is heavy – do as bored posted and attach with toggle in the hollow area.
in the block, not the mortar. the block is much stronger and you can buy many different types of anchors for hollow walls. i would not recomend a toggle, maybe a lead hollow wall anchor, these require a certain tool to set them, but will hold forever if set right.
type s mortar is just about as strong as a masonry unit…you will find little difference as far as drilling for an anchor…if you can hit the block go for it but if one of your holes has to fall on a mortar joint dont worry about it…and its masonry not masonary…
